Mailboxes Boxes that have been “knocked down” as a result of a Village snow plow throwing snow will be refastened if possible.

Mailboxes Boxes that have been “knocked down” as a result of deteriorated materials are the responsibility of the owner, not the village.

Mailboxes that have been “knocked down” as a result of a Village snow plow making direct to the damaged mailbox, and within the discretion of the Village of Perry Street Commissioner.

Mailboxes that had been originally placed, installed and/or constructed improperly are the responsibility of the owner and shall not be repaired or replaced by the Village.

The Village shall not be responsible for the repair and/or replacement of any mailbox that had been originally placed, installed and/or constructed above the standard U.S. Postal mailbox permitted in the right-of-way; the repair and/or replacement of such will be the responsibility of the property owner. (a property owner may determine what the proper location of his/her mailbox is along the road way by contacting the Perry Village Postmaster.)

Although decorative or expensive mailboxes are permitted within the Village, and may be required by individual homeowner associations, they are not required by the Village; the Village’s policy in the case of damage to such mailboxes by a Village snow plow is limited to repair of the existing mailbox, replacement with a generic mailbox, or a cash settlement in the amount of $50.00.

Mailbox repairs will occur as soon as reasonably possible; if a property owner chooses to repair/replace his/her mailbox before the snow removal is completed, the Village will reimburse him a cash settlement in the amount of $50.00.
(Note: A release form must be completed and signed by the owner prior to the reimbursement)

Recommendations to Residents

Check your mailboxes and make sure they are ready for winter and comply with U.S. Postal Service regulations.

Make sure your mailbox can withstand heavy snow thrown by passing plow trucks; Autumn is a good time for residents to make sure their mailboxes are in good condition. Common repairs include replacing loose hinges on a mailbox door, remounting a mailbox post that may have become loose, and replacing or adding house numbers.

Residents installing new mailboxes or replacing old ones must use U,S. Postal Service approved traditional or contemporary mailboxes; generally, the bottom of a mailbox should be at a vertical height of between 40 and 42 inches from the road surface and placed so carriers can safely and conveniently serve them without leaving their vehicles; repairing your mailbox and making sure the post is securely set in the ground, will help it withstand the force of the heavy snow coming off the snow plows.

As you inspect your mailbox it 18 also a good time to install reflectors that make your mailbox easier to see during storms or during dark hours.

It’s a good idea to also make sure your house number is visible on your mailbox as this will assist mail carriers and emergency crews.
